SEASCAPES | SEESTÜCKE

"Seascape"- painting depicting the sea, the coast, a naval battle or similar; marine.

Inspired byMarcel Proust's quote "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes." I focused on the "obvious" in this work. The closest thing to home for me - spatially speaking - was Lake Zurich. An old acquaintance that I have met almost every day for 16 years now and which -like a good friend - reveals many unknown sides on closer inspection.

A"seascape" - this traditionally describes, as quoted above, the dramatic paintings of a wild sea or scenes of ships in mighty battles. In contrast to the heroic, sometimes threatening sea portraits, my seascapes are views into dream-like, contemplative monochrome landscapes.

Misty, rainy. Partly unrecognisable and abstract, with streaks and optical blurs. In order to achieve these results, I made various train rides in the pouring rain along the shores of Lake Zurich. If you get closer to the pictures, they dissolve into the coarse grain. The spaces in between start to fill with ideas of the viewer. If you move away, they come together and give the impression of a picture. The motifs themselves should also be characterised by a narrative openness and not answer any questions even the more concrete they become.

In contrast to my previous photography, which is characterised by a rather analytical view that attaches great importance to the details of the objects photographed, I felt the need to break new ground withSEESTÜCKE. They are an opportunity for me to enter into a dialog with the viewer, who can tell me about their feelings and fantasies about the pictures and thus enable me to look at the obvious with "new eyes" again and again…
